WHAT IS DISC GOLF?

Undoubtedly, the answer normally provided and easiest explained would be something like that provided on Wikipedia:

“Disc golf is a flying disc sport in which players throw a disc at a target; it is played using rules similar to golf. It is usually played on a course of 9 or 18 holes. Players complete a hole by throwing a disc from a tee area toward a target, throwing again from the landing position of the disc until the target is reached. Usually, the number of throws a player uses to reach each target are tallied (often in relation to par), and players seek to complete each hole in the lowest number of total throws.”

Others might throw out a few extra nuggets (all true) to sell it, such as:

  • One of the fastest growing sports in the world!
  • No contact
  • Extremely affordable
  • Very easy to learn, but difficult to master

There, you have the basic rules and the hype. Now, we’re just going to throw on our thoughts on the pile.

Disc Golf is your story. It’s whatever you want it to be on any given day. It is solitude when required and companionship when not. It’s learning to tell time by the swinging branches caused by one of your most fickle friends the wind. It’s digging your feet into the soil beneath you beckoning your confidence for battle on the steepest of slopes. The warmth of the sun. The drenching of rain and the cold bite of the snow.  If you are on your own you don’t have to play by any rules at all. In fact, you don’t even need a course or a basket to play disc golf. You need a disc. You need a target – just pick a tree across the field. You need the will to make that disc fly and to watch your story unfold before you. Someday’s it’s a good story, someday’s not. Still it’s your story. It’s real. It’s joyous. It can hurt. It calls you up late at night as you restlessly try to sleep just to remind you of that one perfect beautiful shot that seemed to just weave around all the obstacles in your path and land almost exactly where you told it to. To tell you you are a great aviator and tomorrow is another chance to be even greater. That you can add another chapter to your story.

Now we ask the question.
